Haldighati, located 48 kilometres from Udaipur, is a historic mountain pass in the Aravalli Range that links Rajasthan's Rajsamand and Pali districts. It forms an important part of the Udaipur Tourism. The historical battle of Haldighati, which took place in 1576 AD between Maharana Pratap Singh and Man Singh, the Mughal emperor Akbar's commander, is well-known. This fight was one of the most important events in Rajput history, yet it was also one of the shortest conflicts in Indian history, lasting barely 4 hours. The Haldighati pass, where the fight took place, is now a tourist attraction, commemorating Maharana Pratap Singh and his gallant steed Chetak. The name Haldighati comes from the yellow-colored soil of the region, which resembles turmeric. This was the legendary Maharana Pratap's battleground, as well as the final resting place of his horse, Chetak. At the site of Chetak's death, Maharana Pratap constructed a tiny memorial to his steed. At Haldighati, the cenotaph still stands. In 1997, the Maharana Pratap National Memorial was given the go light by the Indian government. A bronze statue of the Maharana astride Chetak stands at the monument. Both of these have a great significance in Udaipur and should be visited on an Udaipur Trip Packages. Haldighati's Battle Man Singh I and Asaf Khan I was sent by Akbar to command an army against Maharana Pratap in 1576. The Rana marched with a force that was over half the size of the Mughal army and took up position near Haldighati, which was at the mouth of a defile. Afghans commanded by Hakim Khan Sur and a small troop of Bhil tribes led by Rao Poonjaji fought with him in his army. In preparation for the Mughal onslaught, the Rana had destroyed the whole countryside up to Chittor in order to deny the Mughal army access to food and fodder.
